How was the Opium war related to social and consumer trends in Britain?

What does this tell us about China’s shifting position in the global economy?

1st answer) Because China refused to fix the trade imbalance, Britain resorted to Opium. A highly addictive drug grown in North India. The grab for Opium in China soon increased dramatically. Instead of Britain paying for the imports, it is now China.

2nd answer) Because of the Opium War(S) (There is two), China is now in a worse position forever, making it a easy target for conquering nations. China’s Economy slipped down even more, because they had to pay heavy indemnity for Britain, and had to give up Hong Kong in the Treaty of Nanjing.

What was the overwhelming scientific view of future temperature trends in the 1970’s?

March 3rd, 2010

And Why?
John Terry – I said SCIENTIFIC.

There wasn’t an overwhelming view at the time, but most studies predicted warming from greenhouse gases. Here’s an AMS study on the matter.

Claims that scientists predicted an ice age are clearly not justified by an objective examination of the peer-reviewed scientific literature. The purpose of the false claims is to discredit climate scientists.

What did exist in the 70’s were some sensationalist articles in the popular press that talked of global cooling, not much different than today, really. Today, however, the popular press is even more disconnected with the scientific community. Examples:

Is Google flu trends accurate?

March 3rd, 2010

On Google flu trends, it shows influenza dropping in many states.

But according to the CDC and WHO, they show that influenza is increasing sharply.

Which is right?

Google flu trends- http://www.google.org/flutrends/us/

CDC- http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/updates/us/#iligraph

CDC is more accurate. Google is based on search trends.

People who care enough to search are reaching info saturation, so searches are beginning to slack off.

Can Milankovitch cycles explain global warming trends?

March 3rd, 2010

Nope.

The timing is all wrong. The cycles are pretty regular. We had a warming Milankovic cycle about 12,000 years ago, it got us out of the last Ice Age. Since then we (until recently) were in the slow cooling that follows a warming cycle. The next warming cycle isn’t due for 80,000-90,000 years.

Also, the Milankovic cycles aren’t some magic. They cause an increase in solar radiation that would be EASILY detectable. But measured solar radiation shows the slow decline related to the slow cooling mentioned above.

This graph shows the slow decline in temperature, after the last Ice Age, and before global warming.
