Yes there are trends, and, depending on the target market, the trend would apply. A big trend nowadays is to just "go simple". Branding, coloring, logotypeing and full- packaging design varies from product, target market, marketing and distribution, etc.
References :
All depending on the group you are targeting. That would of course depend on the product. If you're product is targeting women then of-course a woman touch would be suitable towards the logo and packaging design. A box with such a design will not be picked-up by a man. (Unless he was a designer himself) Therefore, if designed strategically, more woman would pick it up whether or not they knew what is was then they'd read it and determine if they want to purchase it.

Some stores in the inner cities will use mannequins with a more gifted rear than the standard mannequins. This would do 1 of 2 things. Allow the female consumer feel that her rear would look like that of the mannequin or a woman with a gifted rear would think that the item would fit her perfect.
References :
of course there are! the most popular one, for example, is to use red color that stays in the consumer's mind [coca cola, vodafone, Ferrari..]
people think graphic design as an art, but the truth is that since it's an applied art it's FULL of rules that you need to follow..but it's an awesome job!! :o)
References :
graphic design studies and working experience

Yes, there are trends (not that I know exactly what they are.) I used to work as a market researcher, and 2 studies involved changing corporate logos and most all had to do with product placement. Eye tracking devices at our facility allowed us to let the company know how well their visuals were working. Hope that helps.
References :
Worked in field.
