I think that one of the major recent discoveries is the functionality of micro RNAs (miRNAs), small transcribed but non-coding RNAs that can participate in gene regulation. It seems that mutations in these miRNAs can lead to some cancers. Research in this area may lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies for human disease.
