What are some trends I could write a research paper on?

Have to decide on a topic by later today, and I have *no* clue what I want to write about….it has to be on a trend – any kind of trend (the current trend of bad horror movies and global warming were thrown around as suggestions in class)

A couple of ideas I’ve tossed around:
- the changing American family (more single-parent homes, less family time…)
- personal spending habits/debt (like all the credit card debt)
- government assistance/welfare (I know it’s always existed in various forms ever since America was founded, it’s just increased a ton over the years. That counts as a trend, right?)

Any other ideas? I want to write about something interesting but somewhat easy to research, but my brain is totally dead right now (in the middle of midterm week ) Thanks
