OK Desiasia…so you are from India or Pakistan as your name implies. Lets just say that they are trying to overtake the West with Islam and to force us into their way of thinking as they have done in other parts of the world. All this wearing of burkha and hijab in the West is all confrontation on the part of the women when in places like Mumbai the modern girls do NOT wear these things. I can only say that the girls who wear them in the west are from backward thinking villages and from the poorer underpriviledged families and their modern sisters in India and Pakistan would have a good laugh at them!!! Lets look at Benezir Bhutto ….she is a Moslem and from a higher class and she doesnt wear the burkha or hijab so doesnt that say something loud and clear to you……oh…by the way dont try that race thing on me we are a Sindhi family!!!

That it is the ‘be all and end all’. I am not a Muslim but it does grate on me that when we say Asian everyone thinks Muslims, even the Muslim community but it is NOT. I am Asian but because of this racial confusion and misinformation, I prefer to be known as British Indian and not British Asian.
There are a lot of fabric shops but again not all of them are Muslim owned – My relative owned a fabric shop!
People forget that Asian in UK means people either from or descended from people from the Indian Subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc) and you can be any religion i.e. Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Muslim, Christian.
I believe there is a lot more ignorance to other Asian cultures. There seems to be a lot of time and focus given to Ramadan and Eid with festivals and parties organised by community leaders and council officials taking part. However, by the same token where was the big event for Diwali (09 Nov 07) – a very important date in the Indian calendar for all Hindus, Sikhs and Jains?
Most of my colleagues had no idea what Diwali is or what it represents but everyone knows the Muslim religion. There is so much focus on it today that anyone Asian is automatically seen as Muslim – is this fair?
to Phantomswife:
India is a HINDU state not Muslim – they’re a minority in India. Those that you refer to wearing Salwar Kameez and Chunni are most likely NOT Muslim but Sikh and Hindu – the main religions in India. I’m Sikh and worn these! Most British Indians are NOT Muslims as Muslims are British Pakistanis.
Some Muslims in India DO wear those clothes but stay in their own communities. You will find more Muslims in Pakistan and Bangladesh than India.
